Melanie Jeanne Thurmond, 63, the beloved widow of William David Thurmond, Jr., entered into the presence of the Lord on Tuesday, November 18, 2025. She was born in Stoughton, MA, to the late Donald Sanford Kitchell and Margaret Elizabeth Torrey Burnette.
Mel was a naturally gifted artist who expressed herself through drawing, painting, and crochet. Known for her infectious laugh and playful sense of humor, she could brighten any room she walked into. She adored the color green and had a lifelong fascination with four-leaf clovers. Mel was also famously loyal to her favorite drink—Pepsi.
Above all, she treasured her role as Mema and found her greatest happiness in her grandchildren.
She leaves behind her son, Michael Grover and Lora; two daughters, Lisa Holder and her husband, Bradley, and Amanda Wheeler; thirteen cherished grandchildren—William, Karlee, Brylee, Kynlee, Kira, Autry, Nick, Tyler, Emma, Kera, Payne, Norah, and Cori—and a great-grandchild, Teigan. She is also survived by two brothers, Kurt Payden and Mark Kitchell; three sisters, Donna Porter and her husband, Jessie, Dawn Williamson and her husband, Michael, and Traci Carney; as well as two nieces who were especially dear to her, Bree and Jena. Her step-mother, Lorraine Kitchell, also survives her.
Mel was preceded in death by two sisters, Laura Payden and Joy Kitchell.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
