Robert Young, Jr. Obituary

Robert Hackett Young, Jr., 84, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 9, 2025.  He was the son of the late Robert Hackett Young, Sr. and Mary Watkins Young.

Robert is survived by two sons, Greg Young with wife Pam and Steven Young with wife Krista; a daughter, Sonya Dunklin with husband, Buddy; nine grandchildren; many great grandchildren; and a sister Caroline Poole with husband, Tommy.

Robert was born December 31, 1940, in Laurens, SC and graduated from Hickory Tavern High School in 1959. Later that year, he answered the call to serve his country and enlisted in the United States Air Force. He began his military journey at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas, where he completed basic training and initial preparation for duty. He then served as part of the 8th Air Force, 397th Bomb Squadron at Dow Air Force Base in Bangor, Maine. Robert was honorably discharged from active duty in August 1963 with the rank of Airman First Class.

After leaving the Air Force, Robert began working at Laurens Glass Plant where he remained employed for 40 years. He remained engaged in his community and served on the Laurens District 55 School Board for eight years. He was an active member of Shiloh Church. Robert enjoyed woodworking and loved making and gifting beloved foot stools to the people he loved. He also enjoyed tending to his farm. He was a Mason, a Shriner, and a member of the Hickory Tavern Lions Club. His greatest joy in life was his family. He was a proud father, a fabulous grandfather, and a great friend to many, often found hanging out with his loyal four-legged companion, Dan.

Affectionately known as "Bob" and "Papa Bob," Robert’s life stands as a testament to the principles of duty, honor, and commitment, a legacy he proudly upheld in his military service, his family, his community, and his many friendships.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the McCall Hospice House in Simpsonville for the compassion and love shown to Bob and the family during this difficult time, as well as the Veterans Last Patrol for the heartfelt honor ceremony for Bob.

In lieu of flowers, please send any donations to Shiloh Church or Hickory Tavern Lions Club.

A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, December 11, 2025, at Shiloh Church, 36 Shiloh Church Road in Gray Court beginning at 12:00 pm. Receiving of friends will be held immediately following the service. A private Inurnment will be at Rabun Creek Baptist Church Cemetery at a later time.
