Charles Nevin Whiting, 95, husband of Marion Juanita Smith Whiting for over 76 years, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, February 19, 2026.  Born in Dunean, SC he was a son of the late James Everett Whiting and Lucy Murrell Minyard Whiting.Charles Nevin Whiting, 95, husband of Marion Juanita Smith Whiting for over 76 years, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, February 19, 2026.  Born in Dunean, SC he was a son of the late James Everett Whiting and Lucy Murrell Minyard Whiting.

Shortly after his marriage to Marion, Charles served our country in the US Air Force and was stationed in Orlando.  They moved back to the upstate and Charles began a career with the Greenville Water System and served as a superintendent of construction.  He earned the nickname “Rock” from the crews that he supervised.  When the family moved to the Simpsonville area, Charles was the first fire chief for the East Simpsonville Fire Department that he helped establish.  He also served on the Board of Commissioners for what is now known as Clear Spring Fire Department.  Charles was a faithful servant at Five Forks Baptist Church where he was known as “grandpa of the church”.  He served as a deacon, head usher, and drove the church bus.  In his spare time Charles enjoyed woodworking and woodturning and was considered an artist.  He also enjoyed working in his beautiful yard that he meticulously maintained.  To the family, he was simply known as “Pops” and will be greatly missed.

Surviving are four children, nine grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held at Five Forks Baptist Church on Tuesday, February 24, 2026 beginning at 11:00 am.  The family will visit with friends following the service.
