Sarah Margaret Thackston Obituary

Sarah Margaret Nash Thackston, 97, passed away Saturday, June 20, 2026, at McCall Hospice House.

Upon her passing, she was welcomed into the arms of her heavenly father and joyfully reunited with her husband, James Toy “T” Thackston; parents, Dee Virgil and Mamie Kellett Nash; brothers, Archie, George, Buster and Bill Nash; sisters, Geneva Cooley and Essie Reid; sons-in-law, Charlie Jenkins and Rick Wrenn; grandson, William Scott Wham; and great-grandson, Ethan Connor Wham. She was the last remaining member of her immediate family, and the last remaining sister-in-law of the Seaborn and Stella Thackston family.

Throughout her life, she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, and friend. Many knew her simply as Aunt Margaret or Nannie.

Sarah Margaret was a faithful pillar of Fountain Inn First Baptist Church where she cheerfully gave her time in multiple capacities for most of her ninety-seven years. She loved her church family, and she enjoyed being a member of the Esther Sunday School Class.

She also served her community at the Fountain Inn Recreation Department alongside Rodger “PD” Terry, Emmanuel Sullivan, and Jim and Fredda Dean Boroff. From running the concession stand, to keeping the book, to cheering on the children, she was a mainstay at the city park for many, many years.

She spent her early working years at Beaunit Mills, Max Karelitz Store and Belk.  But most would remember her from the time she spent at Wilson’s 5¢ and 10¢.  She helped the Stoddard family open Wilson’s, and she remained with them until she retired in her early 80s.  She rarely met a stranger, and she would strike up a conversation anytime an opportunity presented itself.

Left to cherish her memories are four children, Ann Jenkins, Joyce Wrenn, Jane (Wendell Gregory) Wham, and Tim (Leta) Thackston; nine grandchildren, Becky (Jason) McCord, Julie (Scott Tychsen) Wrenn, Stephen Wham, Shane (Ashleigh) Wham, Sherry (Casey) Dunagan, Brady (Kaylie) Thackston, Callie Thackston, Dwight (Melissa) Gregory, and Kurt Gregory; nine great-grandchildren, Sydney (Marc) Thackston, Austin Wham, Aaron McCord, Brian Wham, Gabe Wham, Sawyer Wham, Tucker Dunagan, Blakely Wham and Lane Rawlings Thackston (due in August); four great great-grandchildren, Della, Nash, Gigi and Scottie Thackston; one sister-in law, Inez Nash; and one amazing caregiver, Debbie Richardson.

A celebration of Sarah Margaret’s life will be held on Friday, June 26, 2026, at 1:00pm at Fountain Inn First Baptist Church.  The family will receive friends immediately following the service.  Sarah Margaret will be laid to rest at Cannon Memorial Park.
