Jean Hayes Maxwell, also known as Mama, Mom and Grandma, went to Heaven on June 19, 2026.  Born in 1940, she was the daughter of the late Longstreet Evins and Flossie Hayes.

As a child, Mom worked hard in the cotton fields and in school.  She was proud of her diploma from Taylors High School and after graduation provided for her family by working in the textile industry.  As a young woman, she attended Brushy Creek Baptist Church and served as a leader and mentor for the Young Women’s Auxiliary (YWA).  Mom met the love of her life, Jim, on a blind date and rest is history.  During their marriage of 46 years, they built a home based on faith where Wednesdays and Sundays were spent in church and meals came from the garden.  She appreciated the small things and was a child at heart when it came to family camping trips, holidays and traditions.  Mom stayed at home to raise her children, and her homemade birthday cakes and Christmas goodies made every celebration special.  Later she was employed as a sales associate for JB White and Dillard’s in the children’s shoe department.  Her warm personality and special way with children made her a favorite of the customers.  Sending greeting cards was her love language.  She enjoyed recording family history and was known for carrying photos of grandkids to share wherever she went.  She loved being a grandmother above all and cheered them on at school events and games.  Visits to her house were filled with good food and fun.  There was always room for one more at her table and no one said goodbye without getting a hug.  Mom was a long-time member of Rocky Creek Baptist Church, where she was part of the Donna Sherer Gospel Group Sunday School class, Annie Rector Circle and the Forever Young Senior Adults.

She will be loved and missed by her daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Derrick Jakubchak of Spartanburg; son, Jeff Maxwell of Greenville; and daughter and son-in-law, Sonya and Randy Finn of Columbia; grandchildren, Fletcher, Anna, Taylor, Griffin, Everett, Emily, and nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In addition to her parents, she was greeted in Heaven by her husband, Jim Maxwell, a granddaughter, Katie Jakubchak, and a brother, Hubert Hayes.

A celebration of Jean's life will be held at 12:00, Friday, July 3rd, 2026, at Rocky Creek Baptist Church, 1801 Woodruff Rd. Greenville, SC 29607, conducted by Pastor David Williams.  Visitation will take place before the service from 11:00am to 12:00.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
