Obituary of John Edward Barbrey

John Edward “Johnny” Barbrey, 67, husband of Elaine Cody Barbrey, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 11th, 2019.

 

Mr. Barbrey was born in Greenville to the late James Ralph Barbrey and Susan O’Nell Pressley Barbrey.  He retired from The Cashion Company and was a member of Durbin Creek Baptist Church.  Johnny loved racing go-carts and dirt track cars.  He was a shade-tree mechanic and enjoyed riding his built-by-hand trike motorcycle.  He was a graduate of Greenville Technical College and a certified welder.  Johnny was one of the first kidney transplant recipients in the state.  He received his first transplant 36 years ago at Vanderbilt University Hospital.

 

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are three sons, David Barbrey and fiancé Brenda Layton, Eric Pruitt and wife Brandy, and Taylor Pruitt; two daughters, Kim Brannon and Christa Pruitt; three sisters, Dot Gault, Louise Sherman and husband Bill, and Elaine Chambers and husband Louie; three grandchildren, Travis Galloway and fiancé Dakota Akhmedov, Tiffany Matthews and husband Zach and Paisley Pruitt; and five great-grandchildren, Eli Galloway, Owen Galloway, Kael Akhmedov, Bryson Matthews, and Briggs Matthews.  He was predeceased by a sister, Margaret Willis; and his beloved pets, Rowdy, Toby, and Katie.

 

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Durbin Creek Baptist Church.  The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service.  Burial will be in Cannon Memorial Park.
