Melvin Kornegay Sr., 76, husband of Dixie Lee Couch Kornegay for 33 years, went to be with the Lord on Friday, July 24, 2020. Mr. Kornegay was born in Mount Olive, NC to the late Homer Kornegay and Mary Jane Grady Kornegay. He enjoyed fishing, western movies, and yard work. Melvin was a life-long worker. Melvin retired from Michelin and Lubrizol before driving a bus for Laurens County School District #55. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a member of Hillside Baptist Church and the American Legion. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a son, Melvin “Junior” Kornegay Jr.; two daughters, Jeannie Powell, and Regina Dunaway and husband Kenny; stepchildren, Eric Caughorn, Sandi Avinger, and Vicki Wooten; a brother, Allen Kornegay; three sisters, Brenda Taylor and husband Ronnie, Kathy Matthis, and Betty Lou Sisk; twelve grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by three brothers, Jack Kornegay, David Kornegay, and Ricky Kornegay; and two sisters, Ann Miller and Alma Smith. Graveside services, with Military Honors, will be 10 o’clock Monday at the Hillside Baptist Church Cemetery Pavilion. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Way, Memphis, TN 38105; or to Hillside Baptist Church Building Fund, 501 Hillside Church Road, Fountain Inn, SC 29644.
