Obituary of Nancy Sloan

Please share a memory of Nancy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Nancy Elaine (Owings) Sloan of 1208 Casey Rd, Woodruff, SC, died December 22, 2023 in Spartanburg, SC at the age of 82. She was born in Laurens County, SC on February 23, 1941. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. James A. Owings, USMC, and the widow of the late Garvin H. Sloan, USAF. Nancy attended Woodruff High School and was a member of Antioch Baptist Church.

Growing up in a military family, Nancy lived in many places; Laurens, SC; Newfoundland, Nova Scotia; Camp Pendleton, California; Parris Island, SC; and Camp Lejeune, NC. She moved with her husband to Coolidge, Arizona; Selma, Alabama; Niceville, Crestview and Lynn Haven, Florida, but Woodruff was always home. She was a strong woman who spent many years raising her six children on her own during Garvin’s overseas deployments.

She held several jobs over the years in sewing plants, grocery stores and as a weaver at Inman Mills’ Ramey Plant in Enoree, SC. In her spare time, she loved reading, jigsaw puzzles, gardening, her dogs, and the Atlanta Braves. She loved her family most of all, especially her grandchildren. She also loved her church family. Everyone was always welcome in her home and around her table. She loved cooking for all of them.

She is survived by her children; Kathy (BJ) Lathwell of Inman, Steve (Arminda) Sloan and Jimmy Sloan of Woodruff, Betty Jo (Thomas) Turner of Moore and Tony (Lisa) Sloan of Gray Court. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her daughter Debbie Price, son-in-law Robbie Price and daughter-in-law Sandy Sloan.

Special thanks to all of the caregivers who lovingly cared for her; to Jennifer and Mary; to Lynn and Alyssa; and especially to Lindsey who became Nancy’s “granddaughter”.

A Celebration of Nancy’s Life will be 12 noon Saturday at Antioch Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Danny Garrett. The family will receive friends an hour prior. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, 301 University Ridge, Greenville SC 29601.
