Obituary of Raymond Thomas Cox

Raymond Thomas Cox, 78, the husband of Mary Owens, went to be with the Lord on July 30, 2021. Raymond was born in Middletown, Ohio to the late Roy Arthur Cox and Florence Mae Hale. He was a school teacher for the Greenville school district and retired from both the Ohio and Greenville school systems. Raymond was an alumnus of Hiram College and the University of Akron. He played and coached football, tennis, and basketball. He enjoyed gardening, shag dancing and crab legs. Ray had volunteered to many organizations throughout his life - He had been a volunteer forest fire fighter, he donated his time to several churches, animal rescues, community gardens, homeless shelters and tutored many children. He was also an ice cream connoisseur and he made some of the best home-made ice cream in all of history. Ray had written curriculum for academically talented children. He also organized field trips to NASA research and training facility in Huntsville (Space Camp) and the Roper Mountain Science Center. Ray had coached a two-time national Lego robotics team as well as Odyssey of the Mind bridge building teams. He had also been a recipient of the prestigious Golden Apple award. Surviving in addition to his wife are his son, Tim Cox; sisters, Roberta (John) Simpson, Darlene (Paul) Tyra; brother-in-law, Myron Loop; two grandchildren, McKenzie Harris and Evelyn Cox. He is predeceased by a daughter, Tracy Cox; and a sister, Violet Loop. Services will be held at Fountain Inn Presbyterian, Tuesday, August 3, 2021 at 6 PM with visitation following.
