Jack was one of the best! A dedicated SCV member, historian, but very shy and reserved (not much of a public speaker). You know that last part is not true. I enjoyed many of his presentations and loved working with him. I know you all miss him very much and I assure you we do as well. Let me know if I can ever be of assistance! Greenville Chautauqua will miss Jack from our audience. What a great advocate of making "History Come Alive." He was a great source sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm with Chautauqua. We was truly an advocate of remembering where we come from and how we got to where we are.

This loss will hurt for a long time. I really liked and admired Jack. I found a SCV application form my Dad completed and Jack signed from 1989! I considered him a perfect Southern gentlemen. He loved God, family and Country and fought tirelessly to preserve its history. He was an amazing teacher whose love of history was infectious to thousands. If we wanted to have good attendance at one of our meetings, all we had to do was call Jack to present! I know this is a huge loss to the family but Jack's passing is a tremendous loss to the community, the State and the SCV. He was such a positive influence to so many people. He will be greatly missed.

I was so sorry to hear about Jack Marlar's passing. The staff of the South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum sends their sincere condolences to the Marlar family. We worked with Jack on many projects. He was very supportive of our museum and we also supported Jack in his many historical endeavors. Jack taught me a lot about Confederate artillery. He was also fiercely interested in always learning more about South Carolina history and regularly attended the SC Civil War Symposium held at the Department of Archives and History, and even presented an indepth program on artillery at the Symposium. I considered Jack a personal friend and always looked forward to seeing him at the museum, at SCV conferences, and at his Camp meeting in the Upstate. I will miss him, and I'm so sorry I was unable to attend his service today, but I will pray for Jack and his family. God bless!

Marlar Family,
Please accept our sincere condolences in the passing of Mr. Jack.
Those of us who were reenactors via the Palmetto Battalion quickly learned who Mr. Jack was, and he was a source for solid and reliable information any time there was a question needing an answer. He was the "go to" man for sure.
We all have fond memories of the times he visited our SCV Camp and spoke to us about our ancestors and what they fought and died for in attempting to establish a Southern Nation, separate and apart from the tyranny of the Lincolnites and the ever expanding Federal behemoth. Time has proven their suspicions were well founded.
May we always strive to keep alive the TRUE history of the Confederacy, and preserve the historical sources that let us know that they were correct and just. That was what Mr. Jack was so dedicated to.
Never Forget.
Deo Vindice,
Martin W. Farwell

Jack was a great man, loved by many. My heart goes out to his family. He stood up for what he believed in, was a role model for many individuals. To me it was very clear of his love for Christ and family. I know Jack loved the South, I've heard him speak at many SCV functions and he was a wealth
of knowledge. A true Patriot, this has been a great loss for us all. May GOD bless his memory.

A true Compatriot for the cause of Southern heritage and history, and a Southern Gentleman in the most honorable sense of the term, Jack was a good friend and an inspiration to all of us. With his encyclopedic knowledge of our history and his missionary zeal for educating any and all who would listen, Jack cannot be replaced. May our Lord grant His "peace that passeth all understanding " to all of Jack's family and loved ones, friends and Compatriots. Deo Vindice.

May I offer my sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of Compatriot Jack Marlar. May God extend to y'all an extra measure of His peace, comfort and love during this time of sorrow. I pray that the love of family and friends surround you all and be a comforting presence in the coming days.
My memories of Jack will always be associated with his love of Southern heritage and the Sons of Confederate Veterans. I remember well his lectures on Confederate history and will never forget his passionate delivery and defense of the righteousness of their Cause of political independence. As a reenactor, I will remember his dedication to the hobby and his accurate portrayal of a Confederate artillerist. His presence in the SCV and at reenactments will be sorely missed, but he will never be forgotten. Rest in peace beloved Compatriot as you "cross the river and rest in the shade of the trees" with the men in grey and butternut that you loved and defended so well. Thank you and I hope to see you in the heavenly realms sometime soon.

My Dearest Mosie and Ann,
My heart cried when I read of Jack’s passing this morning. I am so sorry!! Mosie I remember the first time Jack brought you over to Mom and Dad’s house after y’all were married. He was so proud of you! His love for you and Ann was evident in everything he did. I can hear the many ‘talks’ he had with Dad. He always put his whole heart and soul into everything he did. I know that your hearts are hurting, but I pray that God will help to ease your pain. The many happy memories you hold dear will eventually bring you peace and comfort. My love goes out to all of you. If there is anything I can do, please don’t hesitate to call me.
With much love and many hugs,
Dot Stoddard Turner

Jack's passing leaves a hole in the hearts of his many friends in the historical reenacting community. No one in South Carolina has done more to research the technology and material culture of nineteenth century artillery, and implement his findings on the reenactment field. Jack's legacy to his fellow reenactors is his example of a passionate, informed, articulate educator, who would give voice to his love of Southern history and military innovation. If you ever fired a cannon under Jack's direction, you did it the way our ancestors did from 1861 to 1865. Thanks to Jack, that artillery drill is still alive, and when spectators witness it on the reenactment field, performed by Jack's pupils, they know that it is something special. Thank you, Jack, for leading us, teaching us, training us, teasing us, and being our friend. We will strive to continue what you started, and our standards in historical reenacting will always be those that you established.
