Obituary of Sharon Cox Johnston

Please share a memory of Sharon to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Sharon Cox Johnston, 68, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Saturday, February 11, 2023. Sharon was born on September 29, 1954 to Josephine Jones Carter and the late Billy Joe Cox in Greeneville, TN. She spent her early years there with her sister Sheila Cox. After graduating from Greeneville High School, Sharon enrolled at East Tennessee State University where she met her husband of 46 years, John Johnston. Together they raised three children in Greer, SC, where John worked for Bausch and Lomb: daughter Joann who now lives in Atlanta, GA with her husband Adam Humphreys; daughter Jama who lives in Charlotte, NC with her husband Andrew Blevins and grandchildren Morrison and Penelope; and son John who lives in Charleston, SC. Sharon was a loving wife and mother, devoting most of her time to her children who she called Joey, Jamie, and Jay. She supported them through volunteering at the elementary, middle, high school, and district levels, receiving awards for her contributions. Known commonly as Mama J, she was active with the PTA, school improvement councils, booster clubs, athletic programs, and volunteering whenever and wherever needed. Sharon found great pride in all her children completing post graduate degrees. Sharon’s favorite place was home. She spent hours curled up under a blanket reading books and completing crossword puzzles. She enjoyed the guilty pleasures of sweets, soap operas and reality TV, and she was always up for a competitive game of Words With Friends. You could find her beloved dogs, Mattie, Remi, and Kylie, at her feet. Sharon loved gardening and flowers all over the house. She was a huge fan of the University of Tennessee football program and loved going to auctions; however, her greatest joy came in being Memaw to her grandchildren, spoiling both whenever she got the chance. A celebration of Sharon’s life will be at 12:15 pm Saturday, February 25, 2023 at Fletcher Funeral Service, 1218 North Main Street, Fountain Inn, SC. The family will receive friends prior to the service between 11:00 am and 12:15 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her name to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, P.O. Box 5014 Hagerstown, MD 21741. VIRTUAL OPTION: Zoom Meeting ID: 232 713 3597 Password: 12345 https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting#/upcoming
