Obituary of James "Bird" Sauls

Please share a memory of James to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

James William “Bird” Sauls, 86, husband of the late Betty Jean Husk Moore Sauls, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, October 17, 2023.

Mr. Sauls was born in Greenville to the late Clarendon Deal Sauls and Annie Elizabeth Hendrix Sauls Oliver.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.  As a youth, he worked as a butcher at Dixie Home Store, and later worked at and retired from Dealers Supply & Lumber Company.  He was a member of the Simpsonville Senior Center and loved to come to the Taters & More luncheon.  Bird was an avid fan of Clemson Tiger sports.  He enjoyed golf, bowling, crossword puzzles, shag dancing, and helping Betty with flower gardening.  One of Bird’s greatest joys was being “Pappaw” to his grandkids.

Surviving are three daughters, Jamie Ponder with husband Jeff, Darla Mosley, and Jennifer Sauls; a brother, Rodney Sauls with wife Jeanne; a sister, Carol Ann Chester with husband LaMarr; ten grandchildren, Brittany (Daniel), Jeffrey (Courtney), Jeremy, Zack, Mackenzie, Corey (Alicia), Grant (Kristina), Gabbie (Will), Max and Gage; and fourteen great-grandchildren; and a special cousin and lifelong friend, Curtis Burdette.  He was predeceased by a son, James “Butch” Sauls; a sister, June Green; and his step-father, Joe Oliver.

The family will receive friends between 3 – 5 o’clock Sunday at Fletcher Funeral Service in Fountain Inn.  A period of reflection for Bird’s life, with military honors, will begin at 4 o’clock.  In honor of Bird, guests are welcomed to wear their Clemson Tiger attire – trust us, he would appreciate the gesture.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt “thank-you” to the staff of Agape Care Hospice.  Your care and compassion will be forever remembered and appreciated.
