I worked with Dennis and Erna when they were in France. They opened their home for me when I first arrived in Aix en Provence. Later, I moved into the apartment they were leaving behind as they left France. I used some of that furniture for over ten years! I remember that Erna struggled to learn French at her age, but I continued to encourage her and she did succeed in learning it enough to engage with French people and do all that tasks needed. She was a welcoming person and I had many good meals together with Dennis and Erna!. I have many good memories of our time together.

We were with Erna and Dennis in San Antonio in November 2016. We visited " The Alamo" together. This was the last time we spent time together but we have many happy memories of times spent in Aix en Provence as we ministered there together. Erna and Dennis were like grandparents to our four children and we have many memories of making and baking with Erna.
Lots of love.

I wanted to add a memory of Aunt Erna as she was in one of my first memories along with my Cousin Charlene.I must of been around 3 years old. I remember my mom waking me up from a nap and telling me that there was someone she wanted me to meet. I think we were at my Grandma Grace's house in Moorpark Calif. My mom lead me down the hallway and into the living room and sitting on the couch was a pretty lady with blonde hair smiling at me and sitting on her lap was a little girl. This was my Aunt Erna and Cousin Charlene... I have countless memories of Aunt Erna but the one thing that comes to my mind is her gentle and sweet spirit. My husband Josh met her one time and said there was something so special about her. She will be missed!!

My condolences to the whole family. I remember most Aunt Erna's soft-spoken kindness, facility with words, subtle humor, and faithful presence. More specifically, an indelible memory of visiting in the jungles of Urubicha and the loan of an old Honda 90 to drive up and down the rough, grassy airstrip and throughout the local village. A life well-lived and impossible to fully appreciate in all its ramifications. May God bless.

Dear Dennis, Charlene and Steven, We rejoice for the blessings God has brought to Peggy and myself through your love for our Savior as demonstrated in so many ways. A new chapter has begun in your lives, but not the final one. It was in 1966 that we met Dennis and Erna through the Springdale Community Church. We thank the Lord for the comfort He gives in 2 Corinthians 5:7 "For we walk by faith, not by sight." Erna's testimony could be taken from Philippians 1:21 "For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain." Your faithfulness to the Lord was always demonstrated in your communications you sent to us and we will cherish the visits we had in our home with you folks. We are honoring Erna with a memorial gift to the Wycliffe Bible Translators. Until we meet again, may God comfort you in these days of adjustment. It's all because of Calvary we can know our future. I remember when Erna and Peggy Dvorak recruited me as part of Waxhaw Bible Church in about 1994 to be a team of 5 individuals who took a day once a week to serve God by delivering meals around Waxhaw as part of Nutrition for the Elderly in Union County NC. Waxhaw Bible has since dropped away after serving for 23 years. But I continue to serve the route, still called by the same name in and around Waxhaw, 29 years later. I really loved Erna's kind and sweet personality, her gentleness. I am happy she is finally home with her savior.

So many great memories visiting Aunt Erna, Uncle Dennis, cousins Charlene & Steve at the Wycliffe base in Tumichucua Bolivia. The night time alligator hunt will never be forgotten. Another memory from that time is tarantulas!! I recall there was a hollow tree in the front yard full of them. We were instructed to shake out our clothes each morning to make sure there were none hiding there. I have no memory of Aunt Erna ever being stressed by this. She was ever calm & welcoming. A gentle soul with a beautiful smile. Rest in peace with your Saviour now❤️

We grieve with you at Erna's passing but also rejoice with you at the sure hope that was hers because she knew where she was going. We are sure to meet again one day in that wonderful place we call heaven. We trust our heart felt love and prayers will help you through the time ahead.
May we follow Erna's role model of being gentle people of God, always ready to listen, love and impart her special wisdom. We will remember her and continue to pray for you as you adjust to her departure. We reflect on the special impact the two of you together have made on us and our lives.
"Underneath are the everlasting arms."
With our love and prayers,
Pauline and for Tony

One of my earliest memories of Erna’s hospitality was when she invited us to their home in Tumichucua, Bolivia (the Wycliffe jungle base). She had prepared a pot of tea and served grapefruit grown from one of their trees. The grapefruit was sprinkled with something red which made it festive. I asked what the sprinkles were. Erna said it was Jello right from the box (which of course was flavored and colored sugar). I thought her simple resourcefulness was amazing.

One memory I have is when my sisters Sandra {Spenst} Kolarcik & Linda {Spenst} Blade were visiting the Newtons in Tumichucua (the Wycliffe jungle base in Bolivia); aunt Erna arranged an alligator hunting outing for us girls in the dead of night. It was terrifying, haha! Tho we were unsuccessful in bagging a ’gator, she was still able to deep fry alligator tail from someone’s hunt. It was so good! Thanks for the memories! See you on the other side, aunt Erna! I love you! Carolyn {Spenst} Nichols.

I grew up in the same village of Urubicha, Bolivia, where the Newtons served as missionaries. My parents were good friends with Dennis and Erna, and Steve and Charlene were like my cousins. So, I called Erna "Aunt Erna." She was such a kind, warm and special person to be with. I never heard her complain about the rustic adobe home they lived in, or the hot, humid climate of the jungle village. I was always welcome to visit any time. I will remember Aunt Erna for her dedication to her husband and family, for her smile, and for her service to the Guarayos. Her love for Jesus was so evident. Erna loved the Guarayo ladies, and even participated in the "chicha chew!" (Ask Dennis about that). She was so kind when we last visited their home in Dallas, Texas, and she made us a special Bolivian chicken soup.
