Obituary of Mary Hensley
Mary Louise Shawver Hensley, 87, wife of Bobby C. Hensley, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 9, 2024.
Mary was born in Charlottesville, VA, to the late James Edward Shawver and Virginia Frances Pack Shawver. Although an only child, Mary was raised in her grandparents’ home, where she was surrounded by cousins and was deeply influenced by her beloved uncle, Emmet Pack Jr. Mary met Bobby in 8th grade at Lane school, and they soon began dating. After high school, Mary attended the Jefferson School of Commerce and she and Bobby were married shortly after graduation. Over the next 68 years, Mary and Bobby would move more than eight times to various locations through job transfers. Mary had a gregarious personality and enjoyed making new friends and becoming involved in the local church.
Mary was a proud homemaker. She volunteered in her children’s schools, loved decorating her welcoming home, and was a notoriously excellent cook. She bowled in a women’s league, played golf, and she and Bobby joined a square-dancing club for several years. Mary’s favorite role was “Granny”. She spoiled her grandchildren rotten, always cooking their favorite food and spending hours playing board games and cards. Mary made sure her home was filled with laughter and hugs.
After retirement, Mary and her husband purchased a motorhome and traveled throughout the United States with friends and family making wonderful memories that were deeply cherished.
Mary was a member of Fountain Inn First Baptist Church and faithfully attended the Wednesday morning Bible study.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Sandra McGee (Dick); son, Bobby Hensley Jr. (Sharon); grandchildren: Ricky McGee (Valerie), James McGee, Scott Hensley, Chris Hensley (Kelly); and four great-grandchildren, Helaina, Mary Sue, Connor, and Theodore. She was preceded in death by an infant son, Barry W. Hensley.
A Celebration of Mary’s Life and legacy will be held at 10 o’clock on Saturday, February 3, at Fountain Inn First Baptist Church, officiated by Dr. Condy Richardson. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
