Obituary of Betty Jean Laur

Betty Jean Matthews Laur, 75, wife to James “Jimmy” Lee Laur, Jr. for 60 years, went to be with the Lord on Friday, December 27, 2019. Mrs. Laur was born in Greenville to the late William Henry Freeman Matthews and Addie Mae McClellan Matthews. She retired from teaching at Tabernacle Baptist Church. Betty enjoyed bowling, singing and playing the piano and organ. She wrote songs and poetry and collected porcelain dolls. She was an alumnus of Tabernacle Bible College and a recipient of the WYFF Golden Apple Award. Surviving, in addition to her husband, are a son, Jimmy Laur; three daughters, Toni Waters (Mike), Susie Pitts, and Wanda Lee Newman; a brother, Leon Matthews (Teresa); a sister, Pat Towery; a sister-in-law, Ann Young; ten grandchildren, Mike Waters, Jr. (Lisa), Tommy Lee Culpepper (Malisa), Sha Culpepper (Teki Booker); Bobby Waters, Samantha Waters (Melvin), Kristi Culpepper, Steven Waters, Ashley Motes, Nicole Ward and Karolina Waters; and twenty-three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Cathy Ann Laur; a sister, Ellen Brookshire; and a grandson, Chris Berdiner. Visitation will be 5-7 pm Monday at Fletcher Funeral Service. Funeral services will be 1:30 pm Tuesday at Tabernacle Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Graceland East Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Tabernacle Children’s Home, 3931 White Horse Road, Greenville, SC 29611.
