Obituary of Donald Eugene Settle

Donald Eugene (“Don”) Settle passed away at the tender age of 89 on the evening of August 8, 2020 after a brief battle with COVID-19 and pneumonia in Greenville, South Carolina. Don was born in Winona, West Virginia on Friday, April 10, 1931. He misrepresented his age as a young teenager to get a job in the coal mines with his father, but he realized soon after that he preferred to build cars and went to work for General Motors in Wilmington, Delaware. He married Helen Ruth Herron in Newark, Delaware on February 20, 1960. In 1965, he accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior. He never stopped studying his Bible, praying, sharing the gospel, tithing, giving to missionaries, and faithfully serving the Lord through the local church. Don enjoyed fishing for bass and walleye, deer hunting, cabinet making, building and remodeling homes, cooking, and gardening. A member of Temple Baptist Church in Laurens, South Carolina, Don’s favorite Bible verse was Psalm 8:3,4 “When I consider Thy heavens, the work of Thy fingers, the moon and stars which Thou hast ordained; What is man, that Thou art mindful of him, and the son of man that Thou visitest him?” Don is survived by his wife of 60 years, Helen, his daughter Kimberly Diane Settle, his son Donald Edward (Cathy) Settle, his daughter Jennifer Lea Settle, and eight grandchildren: Jared Cochran, Brant Cochran, Halie Sutton, Heather Settle, Ostin Settle, Carlin Settle, Ainslea Settle, and McKenna Butcher. He was preceded in death by his father John Henry Settle, mother Lena Mae Criddle, and sisters Dixie Osborne and Betty Wolfson.
