Obituary of Lester Melvin McLane

Lester “Les” Melvin McLane, a self-made businessman, entrepreneur, and husband to Rita Kurtz McLane for 68 years, passed away in the evening on Thursday, November 26, 2020 in Simpsonville, SC. Mr. McLane was born on September 29, 1929 in York County, Pa to the late Uriah L. McLane and Dorothy Elizabeth Llyod McLane. Eldest son of seven children, Les was educated in a one-room schoolhouse until the 8th Grade, when he began working to lend financial support to his family. Enlisting in military service at the age of 18, Mr. McLane is a veteran of the US Navy, having served on the USS Missouri between World War II and the Korean Conflict. Returning home after military service, Les began a long career as an entrepreneur owning various local businesses including Les McLane’s Barbershop, Les McLane’s Used Cars in York, PA and the Highway Manor Motel in Gettysburg, PA. When not busy working, Les could be found on the golf course or relaxing at home watching the PGA and NASCAR. Having never graduated with a diploma of his own, Mr. McLane was a constant supporter of the educational pursuits of his daughter and grandchildren, seeing them all achieve higher education degrees. In addition to his wife, Les is survived by daughter, Cynthia Lippy and husband Dwight; two grandchildren, Jason Michael Lippy, and Brent Lippy with wife Holly; three great-grandchildren, Adam Celeste, Kaiden Lippy and Brynn Lippy; and brother, Lloyd “Butch” Alfred McLane and wife Vicki. He is preceded in death by siblings Gloria “Sis” Bessie McLane Godfrey, Ronald “Bud” Dean McLane, Vernon David McLane, Ray James McLane, Jack Gilbert McLane and Evelyn Gail McLane. Remembrance services will be held on a future date.
