Obituary of John Deane Harrison

Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
John Deane “Papa” Harrison, Sr. went to be with the Lord March 12, 2021. He was 94 years old. Born June 1, 1926, in Biltmore, NC to the late James Furman Benson Harrison and Ruth Tecora Harris Harrison. Deane lived a rich, full life that exemplified the qualities of “The Greatest Generation”. Drafted into the United States Army at 18, he served valiantly in the European theater, advancing all the way to the heart of Germany as they fought for freedom and human rights. He rose to the rank of Corporal before being honorably discharged at war’s end. His Military decorations included EAME Service Medal with Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal and ETO Occupation Ribbon. Upon his return to civilian life, Deane met and married the person who defined his time on earth, Margaret Phillips “Nana” Harrison. Married on New Year’s Eve 1951, together they became the living definition of true love. They had 5 children, 12 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren, all because Deane and Margaret fell in love. “My command is this; Love each other as I have loved you.” John 15:12 Deane lived this verse unselfishly. In addition to his parents, Deane was predeceased in death by two sons John Deane Harrison, Jr. and Mark Anthony (Tony) Harrison; and siblings Margaret Schaeffer, Marion Harrison, James Harrison, and Wesley Harrison. Deane is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Margaret Phillips Harrison; one sister, Cathy (Rick) Rushton; five children, Lynn Johnson, Phil Harrison, Lisa Harrison, Teresa (Bob) Post and Rebecca (Johnny) Buchanan; 12 grandchildren; and 18 great grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held Friday, April 9, 2021 at 12:30 pm at Rockvale Baptist Church (652 Old Grove Road, Piedmont, SC 29675) with visitation beginning 1 hour prior.
