Obituary of Joe Perry Howard

Joe P. Howard, 87, of Simpsonville, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, April 8, 2023. Joe was predeceased by his wife Mittie Jane Allen Howard. Mr. Howard was born in the Glassy Mountain community to the late Perry Howard and Beulah Pennington Howard. Joe was a young boy when his family moved to Simpsonville. He often told the story of the move down the mountain with only a mule and wagon. Joe was a veteran of the US Army. He served 7 years in Germany as a medic and honorably discharged in 1964. Joe was a member of Clear Springs Baptist Church and retired from the State Department of Corrections in 1994 after 19 years of service. After retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his family. He loved to travel with his wife and friends and going on vacations with his daughter and son in-law. Joe was an avid coon hunter and fisherman. He raised Walker Hounds and had many trophies displayed in his family room. Joe loved training and showing his dogs, often taking his granddaughter Mindy with him. He loved to take his grandchildren fishing when they were young. His son and grandson continued to take him fishing when he was unable to drive and pull a boat. Joe enjoyed helping others and would do whatever he could to help his family, friends, and neighbors. He will be dearly missed. Surviving, is a son, Terry Howard of Fountain Inn; a daughter, Cindy Howard Davis (Lynn) of Simpsonville; and two grandchildren, Mindy Whitmire (Robby) and T.J. Howard (Hannah); six great grandchildren, Addyson, Grayson, Raelyn and Blakely Howard, Trip and Turner Whitmire; three sisters, Shirley Berry, Dianne Hamby (Larry), Evelyn Knight (C.M); and a brother, C.E. Howard (Betty). Funeral services, with military honors will be 11:30 Wednesday, at Clear Spring Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. David Shiflet. The family will receive friends an hour prior.
