Obituary of Matthew James Holcombe

Matthew James Holcombe, affectionately known by his friends as “Coon-Dog”, 21, son of Michael James Holcombe and Phyllis Stone Holcombe, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, February 6, 2020. Matthew was born in Greenville and was a member of Reedy Fork Baptist Church. He worked for Roper Brothers, Inc. and was a student at Greenville Technical College where he was studying biology to become a game warden. He was a graduate of Laurens District 55 High School, where he served on Student Council and was selected by the American Legion to attend Boys State in 2016. Matthew played high school baseball and currently coaches the 12-U Upstate Mav’s baseball team. He was a member of the Upper Carolina Coon Club and the South Carolina Coon Hunters Association, where he served as a youth hunt mentor. He was active in World Changers Missions through Beaumont Baptist Church in Spartanburg. Surviving, in addition to his parents, are paternal grandmother, Fredda Jo Holcombe; maternal grandparents, Harold and Linda Stone; an uncle, Ray Stone; an aunt, Patti Cox and husband Dennis; cousins, James Jones and wife Julie Cater, Jon Jones and wife Adriene, Fred Cox and fiancé Jamie Ridgeway, Mary Kate Cox and fiancé Tyler Laws, and River Laws; his beloved dachshunds, Gracie and Oakley, and coon hounds Lucy and Dixie; and numerous great uncles, aunts and cousins. He was predeceased by a paternal grandfather, James Henry Holcombe; an aunt and uncle, Cathie and Terry Jones; and his dual-champion Blue Tick Hound “Sweet-Pea”. The family will receive friends 5-7 p.m. Saturday at Fletcher Funeral Service. A Celebration of Matt’s Life will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Reedy Fork Baptist Church, officiated by Dr. Bob Whaley.
